About Nakshatra-based naming

In many Indian families the baby's Janma Nakshatra — the lunar constellation the Moon occupies at the moment of birth — decides the traditional sound a name may begin with. Each of the 27 Nakshatras spans 13°20' of the sidereal zodiac and is divided into four Padas of 3°20', and each Pada carries its own starting syllable. Because the Moon moves roughly one Pada every two hours, the exact birth time and the birthplace timezone both matter — a name chosen from the wrong Pada is a very common mix-up.

The Janma Rashi (moon sign) is the 30° sign the Moon sits in at birth. Some families follow the Rashi syllables instead of the Nakshatra Pada syllables; both customs are widely practised. You can read more in our Nakshatra guide and Rashi guide.
